a fair amount of vanity

well reese didn't let me down. she flirted, simpered and played becky sharp very well.

becky sharp (main character) makes me feel a little uneasy though. everyone admires her, she gets what she wants (rawdon) but the main thing that stood out to me was that she compromised. she wanted something and tried to play her way to the top, to survive. But in the process she lost her dignity, and her freedom. Reese Witherspoon portrays becky's realisation of this very well, when she is in the carriage with Gabriel Byrne (excellent Marquess of Steyne), and her face falls.

just goes to show that popularity is fragile, and i know im tempted by it all the time. Knowing how to get what you want is powerful. and when you realise you've compromised...you lose everything.

i think maybe my dissatisfaction with becky sharp is because im a sucker for happy endings. the separation of mother and son in vanity fair distresses me, despite it being a 'best for all' situation. i know the real world is like that so maybe i should stick with more conventional hollywood in order to fuflil my escapism needs!
